If you’re a leader and you work in an office situation, I want you to think about this: What do you do in the first five minutes?

I’m challenging you to stop going into your office immediately.

Start connecting and learn how to engage your team. Be positive, energetic, present and specific with praise. This will create momentum.

Don’t be a seagull.

Seagull managers swoop in, tell everybody what they’re doing wrong, they squawk, make a lot of noise, complain, crap all over everyone and then return to their office.

They tend to make every situation worse.

Being a seagull is a momentum killer. It’s unhealthy for the seagull but also all the other people around them – not to mention the very messy clean-up.

If you have this tendency, you need to interrupt your pattern of behavior before you go into the office. Stop, look up, smile, take a breath. Think about what you’re going to do and the impact you want to have.

Ask yourself this simple question: On a scale of 0 to 10 (with 0 being comatose and 10 being switched-on, positive and ready to take high-quality action and engage your team) where do you fall?

It’s pretty simple. Remember that motion creates emotion.
